Aftercare
You were tattooed in a modern studio using only single-use and/or sterilized instruments. Complying with the following instructions will result in a quick healing process and attractive tattoo.
• ALWAYS be sure to thoroughly wash your hands with antibacterial soap before touching your new tattoo.
• REMOVE the bandage TWO HOURS after leaving your appointment. If bandage sticks to skin, wet the area with warm water and slowly pull the bandage off.
• WASH the tattoo thoroughly with mild, unscented soap and warm water. Be sure to rinse any secretions and all soap residue off of the tattoo.
• LIGHTLY pat dry with clean towel, apply a small amount of Aquaphor Healing Ointment or name brand tattoo aftercare to your tattoo. DO NOT apply a thick coat as your skin must be able to breathe.
• Wash & apply ointment up to three times a day (if necessary) for one week.
• After the first week your tattoo will develop a layer of dead, dry skin. DO NOT PICK this off. It will eventually come off on its own.
• Once the dry skin has fallen off, there will be a period of adjustment for the new skin. At this point you should begin use of an unscented hand lotion.
• Depending on the nature and extent of your tattoo, it may be necessary to wear clothing to protect it, particularly if you work around grease, oil, dirt, metal, etc. Be sure that any clothing that touches your tattoo is soft, clean, and breathable. (NO spandex, polyester, etc.)
• DO NOT let the tattoo dry out.
• DO NOT reapply the bandage, as the tattoo needs to breathe to heal properly.
• DO NOT use Vaseline, petroleum jelly, alcohol, or peroxide.
• DO NOT rub, scratch, or pick at the tattoo.
• DO NOT expose new tattoo to direct sunlight for 2-3 weeks. After that, I recommend you using sunblock (SPF 35 or higher) to help keep it from fading.
• DO NOT submerge tattoo in water for 2-3 weeks. Showering is fine (please do!) but NO baths, pools, saunas, or oceans.
The healing process usually takes between 2 to 3 weeks, but can vary from person to person, size of tattoo, color vs black/grey
